WEBTOON recommendations
I don’t watch many shows or read many books on the regular, but I do read a LOT of WEBTOONS. Webcomics are an incredible medium that is full of so much artistry. I love how the reader controls the pace, but the author/illustrator pulls their eye along. This is a running list of some of my favorite WEBTOON comics. If you have recommendations, I’d love to hear yours!

Day of Disaster
Hard to say what this is about without spoilers, but this one is an amazing action/thriller kinda story with really cool characters. I would LOVE to have someone to discuss this with because I don’t know anyone who’s even heard of it. It’s amazing how they capture pacing and suspense in a static medium. The little details and thoughtful framing of scenes really makes this a treat.
My Giant Nerd Boyfriend
Charming slice of life, usually self-contained with the occasional multi-chapter arc. These are silly, sweet, and a celebration of humanity and small moments. The drawing style is super fun, too!
Space Boy
Scifi coming of age kinda story that I’ve re-read a couple times already because I love it so much. This story is really rich and the art style is quite cool (gorgeous colors)! I really appreciate the wholeness of the characters, even the adults, in a story that centers on young people. Definitely one of my top faves.
Beast of Hadingley Hill
This one is a fantasy setting with some dark undertones and some romance, but what I really enjoy is the plot, the intrigue, and the ensemble of characters who all have interesting personalities, motivations, and ways of navigating the tragedy they’re living through.
Ancient Animal Tales
Land Before Time grew up and is GORGEOUSLY illustrated. This comic features a number of stories (tales!) and doesn’t shy away from some of the more brutal (or graphic) elements of dino life. I also have been learning a lot of prehistory from it, which is cool!
Deadpoint
Sport anime in comic form, but particularly beautiful. Unlike some more happy-go-lucky sport stories, this one is a bit more brooding and mysterious, but that’s part of the fun!
False Paradise
Super philosophically interesting exploration of a world where humans are pets to higher level beings. Like the best science fiction (in my opinion) it challenges you to think about the order of the universe and society in new ways.
Ruin
Gotta be one of the coolest looking comics on the whole platform. The art style is spooky and stunning, the worldbuilding is fantastic, and there’s still so much more to discover. This one is still ramping up, and I’m thrilled to see it.
Secrets of Soulford
I am not really into the enemies to lovers trope, but I am definitely invested in untangling the mysteries at the heart of this story. There are a lot of characters to enjoy in this one, and the sparing use of color is a really cool approach.
Acting Gangster
Very absurd, and I love it. This classic switched-lives story is full of goofy capers and scraps, and it’s fun to see it all play out. The senior gang members are particularly good.
Spontaneous World Shifting
Why have a single isekai adventure when you can have several? This story is full of fascinating worlds with different creatures and cultures. It’ll introduce you to incredible characters (and then break your heart as it rips them away). It’s great.
Wizard of Cedel
This story has multiple delightful interweaving plot lines with lots of lovable and imperfect characters. While the “illegal magic” trope is pretty played out, this incorporates mystery and worldbuilding that feels fresh. Also the art is super cool and unique!
Hotel Limbo
Talk about unique art styles! This story about the people working in the space between life and death is extremely goofy and creative and heartfelt. Some question marks about a disability subplot, but really interesting and off-the-wall story world and style.
The Art of Silence
Where’s that screaming coming from? Why is Charlie the only one who can hear it? This is an epic fantasy/sci-fi story with some really gorgeous and imaginative character designs. I love that even in the mobile-scroll format, the artist still lets us take in the stunning scenes they compose in full horizontal glory.
The Masked Queen
I love a story with political intrigue and complex character decisionmaking. This one has very authentic feeling portrayals of people navigating the messy death of a monarch and rise to power of a mysterious and unpopular queen. Really looking forward to seeing where this goes.
Completed GOLD
Moon You
Extremely funny and clever while also beautiful and deep and admittedly sometimes painful. This is a story about surviving alone on the moon after an asteroid destroys pretty much everything. Maybe my all-time fave or at least top 3 of all time. 11/10 TOP TIER
The Strange Tales of Oscar Zahn
Presented as a collection of stories, this comic is hauntingly beautiful. The stories weave a universe full of spooks and spells, hopes and heartbreak. I found some of it genuinely scary, but it’s too wonderful to put down.
Lavender Jack
I love a good mystery, and Lavender Jack drew me in. Its universe and interesting cast of characters is really thoughtfully constructed with seeds planted deep in the earth only to be reaped 50 chapters later.
SEED
Super prescient story about a girl and her superintelligence… or something like that. This comic started in 2018 and then played out through the pandemic, the launch of chatGPT, and more. Really a wild ride!
Señorita Cometa
This is a kinda classic vigilante superhero story, and it’s really fun. The music episodes and [redacted to avoid spoilers] are also excellent. This comic really leverages the strengths of the WEBTOON platform.
On the Way to Meet Mom
It says it’s complete, but there have been 15+ “Epilogue” episodes released since then. This comic is kinda simple and feel-good, but it’s also very pretty. Found family, parents trying to raise a little alien child, lots of cuteness.
Blacksmith
There’s still some epilogue being released as of this writing, but this magical pirate adventure story has some really interesting characters and is one of the few stories I’ve seen that actually reckons a bit with the real-world history in this era.
Awaiting Escape from WEBTOON
WEBTOON has a pretty aggro IP regime for creators, which can make it difficult for them to leave the platform. It's crummy and often means waiting years for things to be continued elsewhere, but these stories are so good, I had to call them out. Worth the wait!
The Last Dimension
Honestly heartbroken that this one is “wrapped,” at least on WEBTOON, which means we’ll have to wait 3+ years for the authors to be able to share it elsewhere. I hope they’ll keep at it, though, because this is such an artfully connected story with time travel, juicy lore and in-world politics, and the indomitable power of friendship.
Woven
Apparently this is marked as “complete” on WEBTOON, but I believe there are plans for more of it elsewhere, once the creators regain the rights. It’s really good. The depictions of disability are pretty thoughtful, and magic system in this story is really cool (and beautiful)!
