Democratization vs deskilling

This post is a compiled snippet from a Twitter thread that I've transported over here for posterity. The original thread started here: https://twitter.com/b_cavello/status/1334925490885279745

Is there any clear distinction between a technology or process that lowers the barrier to entry to performing an action/doing a job and one that deskills in a way that leads to worse working conditions?

What examples exist of changes that lowered the training/experience thresholds for participation while also increasing the demand (and hopefully income share) for labor?

GPS-based ride-hailing might provide such a narrative, but the most well-known examples certainly leave a lot to be desired when it comes to labor conditions.
